The workshop is designed to give concentrated time on mathematics concepts that are both a part of the elementary curriculum, as well as the main concepts on the content exam. The major topic areas are reasoning and modeling to support understanding of whole numbers, whole number operations, fractions, fraction operations, and decimals. The class is designed for smaller numbers of preservice teachers to investigate the mathematics concepts in order to strengthen personal understandings and connect ideas. We will be discussing models and relationships among the concepts in order to increase understandings that go beyond simply knowing how to calculate answers. The workshop focuses on WHY procedures work and how to break down concepts to help see where classroom students are having difficulties as well as help support students in their understandings. These strategies will help as a classroom teacher, and are the strategies that are assessed on the content exam as well.
