An Overview of Principal Qualifications

The Principal's Qualifications Program prepares candidates for both elementary and secondary school principalships in English public and Catholic school boards in Ontario. This program provides an integrated delivery model which provides opportunities to explore topics and issues of particular relevance to all candidates in the program. The Standards of Practice for the Teaching Profession and the Ethical Standards of Practice in the Teaching Profession have been the foundation for the development of this Principal's Qualification Program.

The program is divided into two parts and is designed to prepare candidates for the position of principal. Through a combination of face-to-face and distance education, future school administrators are provided with opportunities to develop the skills and knowledge necessary to become efficient managers and effective leaders in contexts that are characterized by change and complexity.  The program will reflect the political, economic, and social realities of Ontario society that have an impact on schools and school communities.

The Principal's Qualification Program, Part I is an introduction to the fundamental operational aspects of leading and managing a school.  It is designed to help candidates develop the knowledge, skills, and key competencies necessary to carry out the duties of the beginning school administrator. Part II is designed to enable the candidate to explore, in more depth, the theoretical and operational aspects of the principalship.

Part I and Part II each consists of 100 hours of course work: 70 hours on-campus in Thunder Bay in July and 30 hours through distance delivery. Candidates must also complete a maximum of 20 hours of observation and a 40-hour Leadership Practicum Experience.  The completion of an acceptable Practicum Proposal is a prerequisite for admission to Part II.
